The SwimAmerica Pre-School program now being used is taken from a program created by Jim Reiser of the University of South Carolina. This program will fit the special needs of our 3 to 5 year olds.
Goal: The child will be able to doggie paddle at least 15 feet at or near the surface of the water with the body nearly horizontal without the use of the Safety Seal Swim Trainer. Once the child achieves this goal, we will adjust his or her position in the program to Station 2 and award them a sticker and a trip to the gong!
Safety Seal Swim Trainer: The swim trainer has a 9 buoyancy pad system that enables the child to become comfortable in the water almost immediately. Through a series of activities which are based on the following skills:
Your child will develop confidence and skills to gradually lose pads one or two at a time to achieve the goal mentioned above. We will determine the number of buoyancy pads and when they will be removed or re-inserted. If the proper body position can be achieved, pads will be removed.
How long your child is in the program depends on many factors. But, we want them to have fun, be comfortable in the water and learn good kicking and submersion skills. Our goals as parents may not be the same as the child's goals, so be patient and let your child learn in our program without undue stress from home.
The Safety Seal Trainer is not to be used as a floatation device when a child is left alone!
